New Britain Herald – New Britain Museum of American Art offering several programs and courses this month

NEW BRITAIN – The New Britain Museum of American Art is ushering in the start of autumn with a number of programs and events this month.

The Adult Studio Workshop will feature Sketch with the Masters this Thursday. The workshop for artists of all levels will be led by Kathleen Smits. Participants will watch, observe and draw in front of the West Rock of Frederick Church. Smits will help participants learn the basic techniques with pencil and paper to create shape, form, texture, light and shadow. Participants will explore the landscape paintings of Hudson River School artists in the Martin Gallery and will also discuss the use of space and proportion as they relate to composition.

The Sunday Music Series will feature America, 1850-1852 by Jenny Lind this Sunday. Coloratura soprano Zoe Vandermeer will sing and play the Welsh triple harp to the music the “Swedish Nightingale” sang on their 1850 American tour, which was promoted by PT Barnum.

Vandermeer is an award-winning graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Scotland and performs internationally, including her Carnegie Hall debut in 2014.

A Pastels workshop with Mary Beth Sasso will take place on September 17th. Each participant will learn step-by-step techniques, how to render and interpret from photo reference, and the importance of line, shape, composition, texture, value and color. There will also be a discussion of various papers, tools, materials, and the importance of underdrawing.

Museum Unwrapped, Artist Talk with Lauren Clayton, takes place September 18. Clayton is not only an artist, but also a graphic designer and founder of Studio 162 in Stamford.

The tour of the museum’s masterpieces will take place on Saturdays, starting on the weekend of September 24-25. The visit to the special exhibition will take place on Sunday. Tours of the 30 Americans Special Exhibit will run through October 30, and tours of the Edward Burtynsky Special Exhibit will begin on December 4.
